Invoice parser tools: fields, line items, prices and accuracy claims

Last materially reviewed 2026-10-03

Quick answerAn invoice parser reads invoice PDFs or scans and returns header fields and line items. Parsio, Docparser and Veryfi suit small volumes; Rossum is priced for enterprises. Test on your own invoices.

An invoice parser turns invoice PDFs into fields and line items

An invoice parser is software that reads an invoice, whether a PDF, a scan or a photo, and returns its contents as structured data: header fields such as vendor name, invoice number, invoice date, due date, subtotal, tax and total, plus the table of line items. The output goes to a spreadsheet, an accounting package or an approval workflow so nobody retypes it.

Tools differ mainly in how they are priced and how much workflow they wrap around the extraction. The comparison below uses each vendor's own pricing and documentation pages, read on 3 October 2026. This site has not tested any of these tools, so nothing here is a measured result.

What each invoice parser is best at, and one limitation

  • Parsio: no template to build, since the invoice model picks out fields, tables and line items itself. Limitation: at 3 credits a page, the 100-credit plan covers about 33 one-page invoices.
  • Docparser: charging per document, not per page, favors multi-page invoices. Limitation: Smart Tables arrive with the Professional plan at $74 a month.
  • Parseur: AI and template engines on the free tier. Limitation: post-processing needs a plan of 10,000 credits or more.
  • Veryfi: a free tier of 100 documents a month and per-document pricing. Limitation: the jump from free to a $500 monthly commitment is steep.
  • Nanonets: extraction plus validation and export steps as chained blocks. Limitation: the per-invoice cost depends on how many blocks you run.
  • Amazon Textract: the lowest per-page price here. Limitation: it is an API, so someone has to write code around it.
  • Rossum: a document automation platform sold on annual contracts. Limitation: the price puts it out of reach of most small businesses.

Accuracy claims from invoice parser vendors, and what they are worth

On the pages read for this comparison, vendors describe accuracy in words more than in numbers. Parsio says its invoice model is pre-trained on millions of invoices and calls the extraction accurate. Nanonets says its models give high accuracy from day one. Rossum says it reaches high accuracy through continuous learning from user feedback. These are the vendors' statements. We have not tested them, and the pages we read did not include a benchmark you could check against your own documents.

Even a published accuracy figure would tell you little, because it depends on the invoices used. Scans, handwriting, multi-page tables and unusual tax lines are harder than clean, text-based invoices. The only number that matters is the one you get from your own invoices: take 30 recent ones, including your worst, run them through a free tier, and count the fields and line item rows that come back wrong. Plan for the errors that remain with an exception queue.

Where Parsio fits for invoices and where it does not

Parsio fits a business that receives tens to a few hundred supplier invoices a month by email and wants the fields in Google Sheets or accounting software without writing code. Sixty one-page invoices use 180 credits, which needs the 1,000-credit Starter option at $49 a month on monthly billing. Its invoice page lists invoice number, dates, vendor and customer details, and tables and line items among the fields captured. Line item handling is covered on our line items page.

Parsio is not needed if you handle a dozen invoices a month from the same two suppliers. Typing those in, or reading a text PDF with Excel's Power Query, costs nothing, and our page on when not to automate explains the threshold. It is also not an accounts payable system: approvals and payment belong in your accounting package or a larger platform such as Rossum.

Which invoice parser to choose by buyer type

  • A dozen or so invoices a month: do not buy a parser yet.
  • Small business, invoices arriving by email: Parsio, with Docparser as the second trial if your invoices run to several pages each.
  • Developer adding invoice capture to an app: Veryfi's free tier or Amazon Textract.
  • Finance team wanting validation and routing steps: Nanonets.
  • Large accounts payable department: Rossum.
