Quick answerFor receipts emailed or scanned into a small business inbox, Parsio's AI receipt model is the pick: $29 a month, billed monthly, for 100 credits. Developers can use Veryfi, $0.08 a receipt on a $500 monthly minimum.

Receipt OCR software: the short answer and the price table

For receipts that arrive by email or scan in a small business inbox, the receipt OCR software to start with is Parsio: its AI parser has a pre-trained receipt model, and Starter is $29 a month, billed monthly, for 100 credits.

OCR, short for optical character recognition, turns a photo or scan into text a program can read. Veryfi charges $0.08 a receipt on a $500 monthly minimum; Amazon Textract, Google Document AI and Airparser complete the five tools below.

What receipt OCR returns: merchant, date, line items, tax and total

Parsio says its AI extracts merchant name, date, line items, taxes and totals from scanned, photographed or emailed receipts; the pages read give no accuracy figure. Veryfi prices a receipt per document of up to 15 pages. Google Document AI's Expense parser charges per document of up to 10 pages, and Amazon Textract's Analyze Expense API, built for invoices and receipts, charges by the page.

Monthly plans for small teams: Parsio and Airparser

Parsio's AI parser takes 3 credits a page, so the free plan holds 10 receipt pages a month, enough to check the fields on a sample, and Starter's 100 credits hold 33. Parsio's pricing table calls the free plan Sandbox. Billed annually, the 100-credit Starter plan is $24 a month ($290 a year).

The AI parser takes PDF, JPG, PNG, BMP and TIFF files, and one manual upload holds up to 20 files of 20 MB each. The OCR converter, 1 credit a page, returns text and tables rather than named fields. Parsio's plan cards give 30 days of data retention on the free plan and 90 days on Starter.

Airparser charges one credit per image or PDF page, so a photographed receipt costs one credit. Starter is $39 a month, billed monthly, and the free plan is 20 credits a month. Its paid plan cards list OCR support for images and scanned documents. Airparser sits under "Also by us" in Parsio's navigation, which makes it a Parsio product by parsio.io's own listing.

Per-receipt and per-page APIs: Veryfi, Amazon Textract and Google Document AI

Veryfi's Starter plan has a $500 monthly minimum and charges $0.08 per receipt. It is free up to 100 documents a month, with a 14-day trial and no credit card. Amazon Textract's Analyze Expense is $0.01 a page in Amazon's US West (Oregon) example, and new AWS customers get 100 expense pages a month free for three months. Google's Expense parser is $0.10 for a document of up to 10 pages. All three are APIs, so someone must write code.

Getting receipt data into a spreadsheet or accounting tool

Parsio exports parsed receipts to Google Sheets natively and as Excel, CSV or JSON downloads. QuickBooks and Xero are reached through Zapier, Make or a webhook workflow. Parsio invoice OCR covers invoice fields and line items, invoice parsing software compares tools for supplier bills, and the best document parser table covers emails and PDFs as well.
